It could be because Mitski’s Be The Cowboy was one of the biggest albums of 2018, and also featured a single titled “Nobody.” Whether it’s a provocation, or a bit, or a simple reappropration of Cowboy culture is unclear, though Mac insists he’s never even heard Be The Cowboy. Commenting on the similarities in a tweet, Mitksi wrote that she and Mac probably “just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious.” Classic!
Mac DeMarco’s next album, ‘Here Comes The Cowboy,’ will be released on May 10th. This will be the first release on Mac’s Record Label. The album features keyboard from Alec Meen, while Joe Santarpia co-engineered and mixed the record. The lead track shared is titled ‘Nobody.’ A video was released for it, starring Mac as a cowboy lizard.
McBriare Samuel Lanyon “Mac” DeMarco (born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV, April 30, 1990) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer.[9] DeMarco has released three full-length studio albums, 2 (2012), Salad Days (2014), and This Old Dog (2017), as well as two mini-LPs: his debut Rock and Roll Night Club (2012) and Another One (2015). His style of music has been described as “blue wave”[10] and “slacker rock”,[11][12] or, by DeMarco himself, “jizz jazz”.
DeMarco was born in Duncan, British Columbia, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. For junior high, he went to McKernan School. During high school he was in several bands, including indie rock band the Meat Cleavers, alternative R&B group the Sound of Love and post-punk band Outdoor Miners, which was named after a song by English rock band Wire.[14][15] His great-grandfather is Vernor Smith, Alberta’s former Minister of Railways and Telephones, for whom DeMarco was named.;[15] his grandfather (also named Vernor Winfield MacBriare Smith) was a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta.[16] His mother later changed his name to McBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco.[15] DeMarco is also of Italian descent.
DeMarco’s style employs the use of flat drums, chorus and vibrato effects on the guitar and a generally lazy atmosphere a la soft rock records, muted and low frequency bass guitars. He has mentioned Shuggie Otis, Black Sabbath, Jonathan Richman and Weezer as favourite artists.[47] He has also cited Japanese musician Haruomi Hosono as his favourite artist.[48] His guitar-based compositions have moved from glam-inspired works to what reviewers describe as “off-kilter pop”[22] or “folk rock”.[49] DeMarco has self identified his style as “jizz jazz,” going as far as naming his apartment studio Jizz Jazz Studios, as mentioned in a documentary starring himself, Pepperoni Playboy.[50] DeMarco has pointed to artists such as John Maus, Ariel Pink, Isao Tomita and R. Stevie Moore as influences on his reel-to-reel production style.

Mac DeMarco has announced a new album, Here Comes the Cowboy. It’s out May 10 and will mark the debut release on Mac’s Record Label. Mac has also shared the single “Nobody.” Watch its video, which stars Mac as a lizard/cowboy hybrid, and check out Here Comes the Cowboy’s artwork and tracklist, below.
“This one is my cowboy record,” Mac said in a statement. “Cowboy is a term of endearment to me, I use it often when referring to people in my life. Where I grew up, there are many people that sincerely wear cowboy hats and do cowboy activities. These aren’t the people I’m referring to.”
Last year, Mitski released an album called Be The Cowboy featuring a single called “Nobody.” According to his representative, Mac never listened to Mitski’s album and learned about her album and song title only after determining his own album title and single. In a tweet, Mitski acknowledged the similarities, writing, “I’m 100% sure Mac & I just went fishing in the same part of the collective unconscious!” She continued, “Anyway thanks for the laugh, Mac! Happy release!”
Heart to Heart” and “Hey Cowgirl” are Here Comes The Cowboy’s romantic songs. DeMarco sweetly declares his love with the opening lines of “K:” “As the years blow by/ Baby/ The more I come to know myself/ And as I do my love grows for you.” His delicate vocals and guitar playing complete the atmosphere.
“Heart to Heart” brings a knocking piano and drumbeat. Dreary synth notes drone onward while Demarco sings his dedication to a lover: “To all the time we played a part/ In each others’ lives.” The energetic acoustic and quick, delicate drum snaps of “Hey Cowgirl” contrast with the other two, as DeMarco asks a girl whether she’ll come on a journey with him. “Hey cowgirl/ Will you stay on the farm/ Or will you come on back with me?” he sings.
Outside the love songs, escapism becomes a central theme on Here Comes The Cowboy. “Finally Alone” follows the thoughts of a city creature wanting to escape to, “Somewhere that no one ever would dream to go.” The second verse flips to another perspective: “It turns out the cowboy dreams of the city/ Who could have ever known?” Over peaceful guitar strains and harp-like synths, DeMarco’s high range here is a beautiful breath of fresh air.
Here Comes the Cowboy features keyboard contributions from Alec Meen, while Joe Santarpia co-engineered and mixed the record. Mac heads out on a North American tour this spring. He’ll join Anderson .Paak for select dates on his upcoming “Best Teef in the Game” tour. Find tickets here.
